What is IVF?

A popular assisted reproductive technique, in-vitro fertilization, or IVF as it is commonly known is a complex series of procedures that help couples conceive a child. It is known to be one of the most effective forms of assisted reproductive technology.

IVF Process

During the IVF procedure, mature eggs are collected (retrieved) from ovaries and fertilized by sperm in a lab. Then the fertilized egg (embryo) or eggs (embryos) are transferred to a uterus. One full cycle of IVF takes about three weeks. Sometimes these steps are split into different parts and the process can take longer.

IVF can be done using a couple’s own eggs and sperm. However, in some cases IVF may involve eggs, sperm or embryos from a known or anonymous donor. In some cases, a gestational carrier or someone who has an embryo implanted in the uterus might be used, depending on many factors.

The chances of having a healthy baby using IVF depend on many factors, such as the maternal age and the cause of infertility. Also, if more than one embryo is transferred to the uterus, IVF can result in a pregnancy with more than one fetus (multiple pregnancy).

Why would I Need IVF?

IVF is used to treat infertility and help a couple conceive a healthy child. It is also one of the most primary treatments for women above the age of 40 who want to have a baby.

IVF

IVF may also be recommended if a couple may be facing one or more of the following issues:

  • Blocked or damaged fallopian tubes
  • Ovulation disorders
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Previous tubal sterilization or removal
  • Problems with sperm production or function
  • Unexplained infertility
  • Genetic disorder/s
  • Cancer or other health conditions

  • How many embryos will be transferred?
  • What will the doctor do with the extra embryos?
  • How will a multiple pregnancy be handled?
  • Possibility of donor eggs, sperms, embryos, and gestational carriers

The IVF process can be broken down into several key steps:

  1. Initial Consultation: During your first visit, our specialists will conduct a comprehensive evaluation, including medical history reviews and fertility assessments through blood tests and imaging studies.

  2. Ovarian Stimulation: Once diagnosed, you will undergo ovarian stimulation using hormone injections to promote the development of multiple follicles containing eggs.

  3. Monitoring: Throughout this phase, regular monitoring via ultrasounds and blood tests will be conducted to assess follicle development and hormone levels.

  4. Egg Retrieval: When follicles are ready, a minor surgical procedure called transvaginal ultrasound aspiration is performed under sedation to retrieve mature eggs from the ovaries.

  5. Sperm Collection: A sperm sample is collected from the male partner or a donor on the same day as egg retrieval.

  6. Fertilization: The retrieved eggs are combined with sperm in our laboratory using either conventional insemination or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), depending on individual circumstances.

  7. Embryo Culture: The fertilized eggs (embryos) are cultured for several days while they develop; typically until they reach the blastocyst stage (day 5).

  8. Embryo Transfer: One or more healthy embryos are selected for transfer into the uterus using a thin catheter during a simple outpatient procedure.

  9. Luteal Phase Support: After embryo transfer, hormonal support may be provided to help prepare your body for potential implantation.

  10. Pregnancy Test: Approximately two weeks post-transfer, a blood test will determine if implantation has occurred successfully.

IVF can vary based on numerous factors including age, cause of infertility, and specific treatment protocols used.

In Lotus IVF, it is mostly ICSI that is being offered to all couples.
